Classic Soviet Cars: GAZ-24 Volga
Produced between 1968 and 1985 at the Gorky Automobile Plant, this is a good example of a Soviet car that clearly takes some design pointers from the American automobiles of the time. The GAZ-24 had many minor upgrades over its history, but the largest change was the introduction of the V8 195HP version in 1974. Exported widely, the car seemed particularly popular in Poland.
1:43 scale die-cast model. The Volga was used as a Taxi - in fact probably one of the most numerous types of taxis in the USSR, as well as ambulances, police cars and for governmental use. An estate version was also produced but ownership of that version was restricted, and private owners needed a special licence to own one.
