Classic Soviet Cars: VAZ 2121 Niva
There is a Niva river in Russia but the VAZ 2121 is named after the Russian for "crop field" - don't ask us why! Those vehicles exported from the Soviet Union were given the Lada badge, but behind the Iron Curtain this was simply the VAZ-2121.
1:43 scale die-cast model. Built since 1977 this was a very successful car. Designed as a 4x4 off-road vehicle, it was popular in countries with poor country roads such as Eastern Europe. The car also sold well in Canada.
The 2121 was the first car to move away from the VAZ collaboration with Fiat which started with the 2101, although its boxy style is reminiscent of the Italian manufacturer.
