This comparative wealth of versions was the Soviet's first push to offer comrade customers the ability to choose different trim levels and varying uses of the base car.     1:43 scale die-cast model. Built since 1977 this was a very successful car. Designed as a 4x4 off-road vehicle, it was popular in countries with poor country roads such as Eastern Europe. The car also sold well in Canada.


    The 2121 was the first car to move away from the VAZ collaboration with Fiat which started with the 2101, although its boxy style is reminiscent of the Italian manufacturer.

    1:43 scale die-cast model. The Volga was used as a Taxi - in fact probably one of the most numerous types of taxis in the USSR, as well as ambulances, police cars and for governmental use. An estate version was also produced but ownership of that version was restricted, and private owners needed a special licence to own one.

    1:43 scale die-cast model. As is typical for the VAZ range, the name was changed when exported from Russia. At home it was called the VAZ 2108 Sputnik but in the West we knew it as the Lada Samara. Sputnik is, of course, Russian for 'satellite', and Samara named after the Russian city on the Volga.

    1:43 scale die-cast model. The car was never produced in huge numbers like the Zaporožietis and Zhiguli but the 407 was designed as an inexpensive car for the communist equivalent of the middle classes. Sometimes called the "Soviet Morris Minor", the 403 and 407 remain amongst the most popular classic cars of Russia.

    Classic Soviet Cars: Gaz M-20 Pobeda

    1:43 scale die-cast model. The M-20 was a brand new development from the GAZ factory under designers Andrey Aleksandrovich Lipgart and V. Samoilov. For its time the design style was quite revolutionary and unlike anything that had come before. Production lasted until 1958, with one major upgrade, the M-20B, which offered a radio and improved upholstery.

    1:43 scale die-cast model. Due to their larger size and 6 passenger capability, the Gaz-12 was built for government officials and for use as taxis. An ambulance version was also produced until 1960. It used a 6 cylinder engine, with a top speed of 75mph and managed roughly 18 miles to the gallon.

    This detailed 1:43 scale die cast model is of the ZIM version "Zavod Imeni Molotova" and is black with 'chromed silver' colour detail.

    1:43 scale die-cast model. The name 'Zaporozets' comes from the Russian for Cossack (particularly from the Zaporizhan Sich of the Ukraine), however if shortened to 'Zapor' it means "constipation" in Russian! Its other nickname was "Kuprius" or "hunchback".

    ZAZ produced amongst the cheapest cars available in the USSR, specifically designed for the masses and boasting an immense 41 hp engine. The cars were also very popular and fondly remembered in the Baltic states and Greece.

    1:43 scale die-cast model. Of all the Soviet cars, this Chaika ('Gull') is the one that looks most like it has driven straight out of 1950's America. Production started in 1960 and ran until 1981, although less than 4,000 were ever made!

    Get your hands on this fantastic die-cast model (in black, with silver trim, of course). 1:43 scale with authentic Russian magazine (you won't be able to spot the agents in there - they're very good).
